Charlie Bilello is Chief Market Strategist at Creative Planning, a U.S. wealth-management firm. He's a CMT and holds a CPA certificate.

  • Charts are his thing. He hosts the weekly YouTube show “The Week in Charts” and co-hosts the “Signal or Noise?” podcast.
  • This talk boils decades of market data down to 20 short rules. He posted it with a companion write-up in October 2024.
  • Why we update it: his figures stop in fall 2024. Since then we've had a tariff crash, a war dip, a new Fed chair and a rate hike.

Here's what I tell my students: nobody is coming to save for you. Not the shop. Not a boss. You.

  • No company plan. Booth renters get no 401(k), no match and no pension, and plenty of commission shops don't offer one either. You build your own.
  • Money comes in every day. Cash and card tips hit daily, so it's easy to spend before you save. Pay yourself first.
  • Weeks swing. A slow January and a packed December. A plan has to work in both, so automate a percent, not a dollar amount.
  • Everybody's an expert. The shop is full of stock tips and coin talk. These rules are your filter.
  1. Watch the talk once. No notes. Just get the big picture.
  2. Work the slides. Every rule gets a 2026 update and a tool you can run with your own numbers.
  3. Replay the rules that hit you. Each slide has a “Watch rule” link that opens YouTube at that rule.
  4. Finish the action plan on slide 10 before you close this lesson.

Rules 1–3 · Mindset before markets

Rule 2 · Red-flag checker2026 scam patterns

Somebody pitched you? Tap every flag the pitch has.

No flags tapped yet.Still verify the person and the product before a dollar moves.

  1. Look up the person on FINRA BrokerCheck (brokercheck.finra.org).
  2. Look up the firm or adviser on Investor.gov.
  3. No record? No money. Report pushy pitches at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Americans reported losing $7.9 billion to investment scams in 2025, the biggest loss category (FTC, Mar 2026). FBI IC3 counted $7.2B in crypto investment fraud for 2025. Flags come from SEC Investor.gov (Ponzi red flags), FINRA and FBI IC3 warnings, and SEC case LR-26453 (Dec 2025).

Rule 1 · Be humble

Here's what I tell my students: you don't need to beat the market. The guy trading on his phone between cuts usually loses to the guy who just holds.

Rule 5 · Guess the strategists2025 targets

In Feb 2025, the median Wall Street target for the S&P 500 at year-end was 6,500. By May, after the tariff drop, many big firms cut theirs to 5,300–5,900. Where did it actually finish 2025?

Cash feels safe. Watch what inflation does to it.

Before taxes on interest. Future inflation is unknown; these rates are assumptions you pick.

Cash is for your emergency fund and next month's rent. Long-term money has to grow faster than prices, and that means owning stocks and living with the swings. In 2022 U.S. stocks fell 18% and bonds fell 13% in the same year. Risk is the price of the return.

BLS CPI: 2.7% for 2025, 3.7% for the 12 months to Sep 2026. FDIC national savings rate 0.38% (Oct 2026, via FRED). Top high-yield savings about 4.3% (NerdWallet, Oct 21, 2026; 5% promos have strings). 2022: S&P 500 −18.1% (Slickcharts), U.S. Aggregate bonds −13.0%.

46

companies out of 29,754 made half of all the stock market's net wealth from 1926 to 2025. Bilello's 2024 version said 72 of about 28,000.

93%

of large-cap fund managers trailed the S&P 500 over 20 years (90% over 15, 86% over 10). SPIVA U.S., year-end 2025.

Simplest move: one low-cost target-date index fund picked by the year you'll retire. It holds U.S. stocks, international stocks and bonds, and gets safer as you age. Set it, automate it, leave it.

Here's what I tell my students: you can't pick the next superstar any better than you can pick the next client who'll tip $50. So own all of them. One low-cost index fund does that for you.

Rules 8–10 · The Fed, the shocks, the hype

Fed data through Oct 21, 2026

Don't trade the headlines.

Fed funds rate and S&P 500 yearly returns, 2022 to October 2026 The Fed raised its rate from near zero in early 2022 to 5.25–5.50% by July 2023, cut to 3.50–3.75% by December 2025, then hiked to 3.75–4.00% in September 2026. A new chair, Kevin Warsh, took over on May 22, 2026. The S&P 500 total return was −18.1% in 2022, +26.3% in 2023, +25.0% in 2024, +17.9% in 2025 and +13.7% in 2026 through October 20.

The Fed hiked hard. Stocks kept climbing anyway.

  • 2022–23: hikes from near zero to 5.50% in 16 months. Stocks fell in 2022, then gained 26% and 25% the next two years with rates still high.
  • 2024–25: six cuts, down to 3.50–3.75%.
  • 2026: Kevin Warsh became Fed chair on May 22. With inflation at 3.4%, the Fed raised rates on Sep 16 to 3.75–4.00%. Stocks are still up for the year.

You don't need a Fed opinion to build wealth. Bilello found stocks rose about 35% from the first hike in 2022 to the first cut in 2024 (as of 2024). Keep buying on schedule, whatever the Fed does.

Rule 13 · Drops are normal

2025 had a 19% drop and still finished up 17.9%. In 2026, a 9% dip and still up 13.7% through Oct 20. Bilello found U.S. stocks spent over 90% of the time since 1928 below a prior high (as of 2024).

Rule 14 · Compounding needs time$12B → $145B

Warren Buffett was worth about $12 billion when he turned 65 in 1995. By Sept 2026: about $145 billion, so over 90% came after 65, even after giving away $60 billion-plus. He handed the CEO job to Greg Abel on Jan 1, 2026 and stepped down as chairman on Sep 18, 2026, at 96.

Here's what I tell my students: write your crash rule now, while you're calm. Mine for you: “When stocks drop, my automatic deposit keeps going.” Selling locks in the loss. Sitting out misses the rebound.

Tune Out the Noise

BusinessWeek's “Death of Equities” cover ran in Aug 1979. From 1980 to 1999 the S&P 500 grew about 18% a year with dividends. Headlines sell fear; they don't run your plan.

Respect Reversion to the Mean

Fear hit an extreme in April 2025 (the VIX “fear gauge” spiked past 60), then the S&P 500 rose 39% from its Apr 8 low by year-end. Extremes snap back, both ways.

Watch rule 16
17

Know What You Own and Why You Own It

In 7 of the 9 down years for U.S. stocks since 1976, high-grade bonds rose; 2018 was flat and 2022 fell 13%. In 2026 the 10-year Treasury yield topped 5.3%, its highest since 2002. If you can't explain it, you'll sell it at the worst time.

Watch rule 17
